The Angelic Sweater Poncho: Free Knitting Pattern

Angelic Sweater Poncho free knitting pattern featuring dropped stitches and a scalloped edge.

The Angelic Sweater Poncho

Summer has finally arrived after an unusually cold and rainy spring! If you are like me and love the heat, this is the perfect time of year to pick up a lightweight, breezy project.

While I have a few new designs in the works, I wanted to share one of my favorite classic designs. The Angelic Sweater Poncho is a free knitting pattern that is perfect for cool summer nights or as a bohemian-chic beach cover-up. It transitions seamlessly from day to night and adds an effortless style to any warm-weather wardrobe.

Why You’ll Love This Easy Knitting Pattern

The Angelic Sweater Poncho is a fantastic project for beginners and up. Here is what makes it so versatile:

  • Simple Construction: It is knitted in two identical flat pieces and seamed together at the end.
  • Customizable Widths: The pattern includes instructions for 4 different widths, but it can easily be customized to any size. Tip: You can even sew side seams to turn the narrowest width into a beach top (see the photo at the bottom of the page!).
  • Beautiful Texture: It features an openwork lace and dropped-stitch design that naturally creates a stunning scalloped hem.

Mastering the Drop Stitch

If you have never tried a dropped stitch before, this pattern is a wonderful place to start! While most traditional drop-stitch patterns wrap the yarn only once, this design uses 3 yarn-overs (yo) to create those dramatic, elongated stitches.

Beginner Tip: Having that many loops on your needle can feel intimidating if you have very little experience. One of my pattern testers modified the pattern to 2 yarn-overs instead, and it turned out beautifully! Feel free to modify that row if you want to make it a bit easier.

Choosing Your Yarn

For the sample pictured, I used a medium-weight yarn. However, because this pattern uses a stitch multiple of 18, you can use absolutely any yarn weight you like! If you want to make a breezy beach cover-up, a lighter fingering or sport-weight yarn would look incredible.

Pattern Details & Materials

Materials Needed:

  • Yarn: Medium (4) weight yarn. Sample shown uses Caron Marble Cakes in the color French Vanilla.
  • Needles: Size US 8 (5 mm) knitting needles. (Note: Circular needles are highly recommended to comfortably hold the large volume of stitches).

Gauge:

  • 16 stitches = 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch (St st).
  • Note: Exact gauge is not critical for this project, as any multiple of 18 will work! You can easily adjust your cast-on count to match whatever gauge you achieve.

Abbreviations:

  • K – Knit
  • P – Purl
  • K2tog – Knit 2 stitches together
  • Yo – Yarn over

5: *K1, wrap yarn 3 times around needle; repeat from * across to the last st, k1. *You can change it to wrap yarn 2 times around needle if you prefer*

6: *P1, drop the 3 extra wraps; repeat from * across to the last st, p1. *If you changed it to yarn over 2 times then you will be dropping 2 extra wraps in this row*

7 – 9: Knit.

10: Purl.

11: *K2tog 3 times, (k1, yo) 6 times, k2tog 3 times; repeat from * across to the end.

12 & 13: Knit.

14: Purl.

Repeat rows 1 – 14 until the piece measures 14 inches long or desired length ending with row 14.

FINISHING ROWS:

1 – 3: Knit.

Bind off knitwise.

Sewing the two pieces together:

– At the top of the poncho sew evenly on both sides for the shoulder seams leaving about 13 inches open for the neck. At this point try it on & see if you like the neck opening. You can always sew more or less until you reach your desired neck width!

The Angelic Sweater Poncho laid flat on the floor to show how to sew the shoulder seams.

That’s it and you’re all done! Below is a picture of the 24 inch width and I think it makes a cute summer top.
