Dapper Puff Stitch Cowl and Headband Crochet Pattern

Winter is officially here, and what better way to embrace the chilly weather than by cozying up with a new crochet project! Here is my latest free crochet pattern: the Dapper Puff Stitch Cowl and Headband. This set is perfect for gifting, market prep, or simply treating yourself to something special.

I originally used this stitch for my plush crochet bath mat and I loved how squishy and thick it is that I decided to make this set. You can whip up the headband in under an hour and the cowl in an afternoon, making it a fantastic last-minute handmade gift. The best part is that it’s only a one row repeat, making it the perfect project for watching Netflix or road trips!

I used a medium weight yarn mainly because it is a puff stitch so it comes out thick and slightly heavy even with a lighter yarn. You can use any yarn weight you want but I think a bulky yarn may be too thick. It’s up to you because as long as your beginning chain is an even number this pattern will work. It’s the same pattern rows for both and there is an optional border you can crochet at the end.

A free crochet pattern for the Dapper Puff Stitch shown as a headband. It is modeled on a wooden mannequin and is made with a cream colored yarn.

We will start with the headband which is  worked flat in rows & the two ends are attached with a button making it adjustable. Another option would be to sew the two ends together but I personally love the button look.

You will need:

  • 1 small button
  • Medium (4) weight yarn. I used Big Twist in Light Gray in the picture.
  • Size H (5 mm) crochet hook or any hook recommended for the yarn you are using.

GAUGE: Not critical for this project but mine was 14 sc = 4 inches.

DIRECTIONS:

Ch 16 for a 3 inch width or any even number.

ROWS:

1: YO, insert hook in 4th ch from hook & pull loop through (first skipped 3 ch counts as turning ch 3), YO, insert hook in same ch & pull loop through, YO, skip 1 ch, insert hook in next ch & pull loop through, YO & draw through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1 (V cluster made), *YO, insert hook in ch where last loop was pulled through & pull loop through, YO insert hook in same ch again & pull loop through, YO, skip 1 ch, insert hook in next ch & pull loop through, YO, & draw through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1; repeat from * across to end. Turn. (6 V clusters made)

2: Ch 3, (YO, insert hook on top of very first cluster & pull loop through) 2 times, YO, insert hook on top of next cluster & pull loop through, YO & draw through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1, *(YO, insert hook in same cluster where last loop was pulled through & pull loop through) 2 times, YO, insert hook on top of next cluster & pull loop through, YO, & draw through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1; repeat from * across ending last repeat (YO, insert hook in same cluster where last loop was pulled through & pull loop through) 2 times, YO, insert hook in turning ch 3 space & pull loop through, YO, & draw through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1. Turn. (6  V clusters)

Repeat row 2 until the piece measures 22 inches or your desired length and fasten off. If you are going to close it with a button just remember you need to make it at least 2 inches longer than what you need so the two ends overlap. If you want to sew the ends together make it the exact size you need. You can end it here or make a border which adds a pretty touch!

OPTIONAL BORDER:

You will be working along the two sides in all the turning ch 3 spaces.

A guide on how to finish the crochet cowl with a quick border.

Join your yarn in the first turning ch 3 space and work 4 sc in each turning ch 3 space along the first side & fasten off at the end of the side. Join yarn on the other side & work 4 sc in each turning ch 3 space and fasten off at the end.

Sew the button on one end directly in the middle and you are all finished!

Now for the Dapper Puff Stitch Cowl. It is the exact same pattern as the headband except you will start with a longer beginning chain and the two ends will be sewed together at the end. I used the same yarn, hook, and gauge.

DIRECTIONS:

Ch 50 ( it will make it 11 inches wide).

ROW 1: The exact same as the headband. You will have 23 V clusters.

ROW 2: The exact same as the headband. You will have 23 V clusters.

Repeat row 2 until the piece measures 29 inches or your desired length & fasten off leaving a long tail to sew the seam. If you are going to add the border, work it the same way as the headband before sewing the ends.

SEWING THE TWO ENDS TOGETHER:

Fold it in half and sew only half of the two ends together. Of course you can sew all of it but leaving half of it open allows it to fall past the shoulders which covers your upper chest too!

I really hope you enjoy the free crochet patterns & I would love to see some pictures of your finished Dapper Puff Stitch Cowl and Headband!
