The Big Cozy Scarf: A Free Textured Crochet Scarf Pattern

Can you believe I first published this design as a free crochet pattern on Ravelry nearly 10 years ago? To this day, the Big Cozy Scarf remains one of my absolute all-time favorites. In fact, I still crochet a brand new one for myself every single winter!

If you prefer a shorter version with a button closure, you can also check out my companion pattern on Ravelry called the Buttoned Scarf Cowl. It uses the exact same stitch directions, just with a shorter beginning chain!

Why You’ll Love This Easy Crochet Scarf

This project is a simple two-row repeat that creates a gorgeous, thick texture. Once you get the hang of the “special double crochet” (special dc) stitch, it becomes an incredibly relaxing, mindless project to work on while watching your favorite show.

While it’s a great project for all skill levels, adventurous beginners will want to practice a little bit first. The stunning texture is created by alternating working into the front and back loops of each single crochet and special dc. It might sound a little confusing on paper, but I promise that once you finish the first row, it’s an absolute breeze!

Materials & Pattern Notes

Before you pick up your hook, here is a quick designer tip: stick to lighter shades of yarn! I noticed that if you use a dark color, this beautiful textured crochet stitch gets lost and doesn’t pop. To get the look featured in the picture, I highly recommend a light or bright medium-weight yarn.

  • Yarn: Any Medium (4) worsted weight yarn. I used Big Twist Value in Light Gray for the sample scarf.
  • Hook: Size H/8 (5.0mm) crochet hook.
  • Sizing: The scarf pictured measures 60 inches long and 6 inches wide (Chain 210). I don’t recommend making it much wider, as this textured stitch is naturally quite thick and cozy!
  • Gauge: 14 sc = 4 inches. Note: Gauge is not critical for this project.

Customization Tip: This pattern is worked over any odd number of stitches, which means any even number beginning chain will work perfectly. Want to make a chunky version? Grab a bulky weight yarn, use a larger hook, and simply decrease your beginning chain in multiples of 2!

Repeat rows 1 & 2 until the scarf measures 6 inches wide or desired width & fasten off.

The Big Cozy Scarf is such an easy crochet pattern & there are so many ways you can play with it. Add a button or sew the two ends together for an infinity scarf. I hope everyone loves it as much as I do and happy crocheting!
