Radial Bloom Crochet Sun Hat Free Pattern

I am so happy to share my latest design with everyone: the Radial Bloom Crochet Sun Hat pattern! If you’re anything like me, you dream of those warm, sunny days at the beach no matter what season it may be. This hat is the perfect blend of boho chic style, practical sun protection and it was inspired by my popular Bohemian Doily Placemat pattern!

Why You’ll Love This Pattern

  • Breathable Design: The stitches in the crown allow for airflow so you stay cool on those hot summer days.
  • Sturdy Brim: Designed to hold it’s shape and features an upward curl so it stays crisp and never sags.
  • Packable: You can fold it into your suitcase and it pops right back into shape.
  • Beginner Friendly: If you know how to work in the round, you can make this!

Here is a picture of the crown:

The model is showing the top section of the crochet sun hat and the wide sturdy brim.

So grab your hook and here is the Radial Bloom Crochet Sun Hat pattern!

MATERIALS:

– Medium (4) weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Rewind Tape Yarn for the brown one which is a bulky weight yarn, so I used a much smaller hook to achieve the correct gauge. You will need about 175 yards.

– Size H (5 mm) crochet hook

– Stitch markers.

GAUGE: 14 single crochet = 4 inches.

ADULT SIZE: 20.5” circumference. There is only one size shown but you can easily customize it to make any size.

ABBREVIATIONS (The pattern is in US terms):

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet (UK double crochet)
  • dc: double crochet (UK treble crochet)

DIRECTIONS:

Ch 6 and slip stitch in the first ch to form a ring.

CROWN ROUNDS:

1: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc now & throughout), work 11 dc into the ring, slip stitch in the top ch of the beginning ch 3. (12 dc counting the beginning ch 3 as a dc)

2: Ch 3, work 1 dc in the same ch as the slip stitch, work 2 dc in each dc around ending slip stitch in the top ch of the beginning ch 3. (24 dc counting the beginning ch 3 as a dc)

3: Ch 3, work 2 dc in the next dc, *work 1 dc in the next dc, work 2 dc in the next dc; repeat from * around ending slip stitch in the top ch of the beginning ch 3. (36 dc counting the beginning ch 3 as a dc)

4: Ch 5 (counts as the first dc + ch 2), skip the next dc, dc in the next dc, *ch 2, skip 1 dc, dc in the next dc; repeat from * around ending ch 2, skip the last dc, slip stitch in the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 5. The piece will curl upwards at the end of this round. (18 dc counting the beginning ch 3 as a dc & 18 ch 2 spaces)

5: Ch 3, work 3 dc in the first ch 2 space, *dc in the next dc, work 3 dc in the next ch 2 space; repeat from * around to the end. Do not join with a slip stitch. (72 dc counting the beginning ch 3 as a dc)

The rest of the pattern will be worked in continuous single crochet rounds so you will not be joining with a slip stitch at the end of each round. Place a marker on the first sc and move it up each round.

6: Sc in the top ch of the beginning ch 3 (place a marker for the first sc), work 1 sc in each dc around. (72 sc)

If you want to make the hat larger you can work one more round, increasing evenly around in multiples of 3, before continuing to round 7. For example, if you increase 6 stitches the circumference will be 22 inches with the gauge given.

7 – 20: Work 1 sc in each sc around. (72 sc)

21: Work 1 sc in each sc around through the back loops only.

BRIM:

The brim is also worked in continuous single crochet rounds until you reach the last 2 rounds.

1: Work 1 sc in each of the first 2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, *1 sc in each of the next 2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc; repeat from * around. (96 sc)

2 & 3: Work 1 sc in each sc around. (96 sc)

4: Work 1 sc in each of the first 3 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, * 1 sc in each of the next 3 sc, 2 sc in the next sc; repeat from * around. (120 sc)

5 – 8: Work 1 sc in each sc around. (120 sc)

9: Sc in the first sc, *ch 5, skip 3 sc, sc in the next sc; repeat from * around ending ch 5, skip the last 3 sc, slip stitch in the first sc. (30 sc & 30 ch 5 spaces)

10: Slip stitch in the first ch 5 space, ch 1 and work 1 sc in the same space, work 10 dc in the next ch 5 space, *sc in the next ch 5 space, work 10 dc in the next ch 5 space; repeat from * around ending slip stitch in the first sc and fasten off.
