Pucker Pop Cowl and Hat Free Knitting Pattern
I am so excited to share this free knitting pattern for the Pucker Pop Cowl and Hat set. It’s super simple, satisfying and perfect for beginners looking to tackle their first knit in the round project or experienced knitters wanting an effortless knit.
The Pucker Pop Cowl and Hat pattern is designed to be your go to project for cozy, mindful knitting. It uses a combination of basic increases and decreases to create a pretty pucker texture and the best part is it uses the knit stitch only! If you’re a knitter who prefers to keep things simple or if you’re looking for a relaxing TV watching project, this is it. No purling, no complicated cables, just pure simple knitting in the round.
The pattern is written for a worsted weight yarn, but feel free to experiment with a bulky yarn for an even quicker result!
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Medium / Worsted (4) weight yarn. I used Loops & Threads Impeccable in White Tweed.
- 16 inch length, size 8 (5 mm) circular needles & size 8 double pointed needles for the hat.
- Stitch marker
GAUGE:
It’s not that critical because you can easily adjust your stitches. For this pattern the gauge was 18 stitches & 24 rows = 4 inches in Stockinette stitch.
DIRECTIONS FOR THE COWL (Any even number of stitches will work and you will need about 200 yards of yarn for the one shown in the picture):
Cast on 90 stitches for a 22 inch circumference with the gauge given above.
Making sure the stitches are not twisted, place a marker and join in the round.
ROUNDS:
1 – 6: Knit around.
7: Knit in front & back of each stitch around. (180 stitches)
8 – 15: Knit around.
16: *k2tog; repeat from * around to end. (90 stitches)
17 – 22: Knit around.
Repeat rounds 7 – 22 until you reach your desired height ending with round 22. Each repeat of rows 7 – 22 equals about 2.5 inches. I repeated the rows two more times in the picture which made the cowl about 9 inches high.
Bind off knitwise.
HAT SIZES:
S = 15.5 inch circumference. You will need about 100 yards of yarn
M = 18 inch circumference. You will need about 120 yards of yarn
L = 20.5 inch circumference. You will need about 138 yards of yarn
All three sizes are about 7 inches high but it can be made higher if you want more room.
DIRECTIONS FOR THE HAT (Any multiple of 10 stitches will work).
With the circular needles cast on 60(70, 80) stitches = S(M, L). Size medium is shown in the picture.
Making sure the stitches are not twisted, place a marker and join in the round.
BODY ROUNDS:
1 – 6: Knit around.
7: Knit in front & back of each stitch around. 120(140, 160) stitches
8 – 15: Knit around.
16: *k2tog; repeat from * around to end. 60(70, 80) stitches
17 – 22: Knit around.
Repeat rounds 7 – 22 one more time for all 3 sizes. If you want a bit more room on top, you can repeat rows 7 – 22 two more times instead of one which will add another 2.5 inches to the height.
CROWN SHAPING DECREASING ROUNDS (Change to double pointed needles when needed. If you are working with a different amount of stitches than shown below decrease 10 stitches evenly around for each decrease round until you reach 30 stitches):
1: *K4(5, 6), k2tog; repeat from * around. 50(60, 70) stitches.
2: Knit around.
3: *K3(4, 5), k2tog; repeat from * around. 40(50, 60) stitches.
4: Knit around.
5: *K2(3, 4), k2tog; repeat from * around. 30(40, 50) stitches.
6: Knit around.
*Size small stop here, cut yarn and draw through the remaining 30 stitches. Pull tight & secure it.
7: *(2, 3), k2tog; repeat from * around. (30, 40) stitches.
