Pattern Overview & Notes
- Skill Level: Easy (Great for beginners and experienced crocheters alike!)
- Sizing: One size fits all (8½” by 62”). Because there is only one size, please take time to check your gauge to ensure a perfect fit!
- Turning Chains:
- The beginning ch 3 counts as the first double crochet (dc).
- The beginning ch 4 counts as the first treble crochet (tr).
- Always skip the very first stitch (the base of your turning chain) and work into the second stitch. For ease, the pattern includes a friendly reminder to “skip the first stitch” on every row!
Materials Needed
- Yarn: 420 yards of bulky weight yarn (Category 5). The sample shown uses Premier Puzzle yarn in the color Crossword.
- Hook: Size J / 6.0 mm crochet hook (or size needed to meet gauge).

Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet (UK: double crochet)
- dc: double crochet (UK: treble crochet)
- tr: treble crochet (UK: double treble crochet)
DIRECTIONS (The beginning chain will equal 62 inches):
Ch 188
FOUNDATION ROW:
– Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across to the end. Turn. (187 sc)
MAIN BODY ROWS:
1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), skip the first sc, dc in each sc across to the end. Turn.
2 – 4: Ch 3, skip the first dc, dc in each dc across ending dc in the top ch of the turning ch 3. Turn.
5: Ch 3, skip the first dc, dc in each of the next 92 dc, work (1 dc, ch 5, 1 dc) all in the next dc (I will be using the ch 5 space as a point of reference throughout the pattern, so it’s helpful to place a marker here), dc in each of the last 92 dc, dc in the top ch of the turning ch 3. Turn. (You will have 94 dc on each side of the ch 5 space counting the beginning ch 3 as a dc)
6: Ch 4 (counts as 1st tr), skip the first dc, tr in each of the next 3 dc, *ch 2, skip 2 dc, tr in the next dc; repeat from * across until you reach the ch 5 space, work (3 tr, ch 5, 3 tr) in the ch 5 space, tr in the next dc, **ch 2, skip 2 dc, tr in the next dc; repeat from ** across to the last 2 dc and turning ch 3 space, tr in each of the last 2 dc, tr in the top ch of the turning ch 3. Turn. (You will have 30 ch 2 spaces on each side of the ch 5 space)
7: Ch 3, skip the first tr, dc in each of the next 3 tr, work 2 dc in the first ch 2 space, *dc in the next tr, work 2 dc in the next ch 2 space; repeat from * across to the 4 tr before the ch 5 space, dc in each of the next 4 tr, work (3 dc, ch 5, 3 dc) in the ch 5 space, dc in each of the next 4 tr, **work 2 dc in the next ch 2 space, dc in the next tr; repeat from ** across to the last ch 2 space, work 2 dc in the last ch 2 space, dc in each of the next 3 tr, dc in the top ch of the turning ch 4. Turn. (You will have 100 dc on each side of the ch 5 space counting the beginning ch 3 as a dc)
8: Repeat row 6. (You will have 32 ch 2 spaces on each side of the ch 5 space)
9: Repeat row 7. (You will have 106 dc on each side of the ch 5 space counting the beginning ch 3 as a dc)
10 & 11: Ch 3, skip the first dc, dc in each dc until you reach the ch 5 space, work (3 dc, ch 5, 3 dc) in the ch 5 space, dc in each dc across ending dc in the top ch of the turning ch 3. Turn. (At the end of row 11 you will have 112 dc on each side of the ch 5 space counting the beginning ch 3 as a dc)
12: Repeat row 6. (You will have 36 ch 2 spaces on each side of the ch 5 space)
13: Repeat row 7. (You will have 118 dc on each side of the ch 5 space counting the beginning ch 3 as a dc)
14: Ch 1, sc in the first dc, sc in each dc across to the ch 5 space, work 7 sc in the ch 5 space, sc in each dc across ending sc in the top ch of the turning ch 3 & fasten off.
