Free Bohemian Doily Crochet Placemat Pattern

A free pattern for the Bohemian Doily Crochet Placemat shown in a neutral ombre yarn.

Bohemian Doily Crochet Placemat

Spring is almost here, and I get so excited every year to refresh my balcony decor with new crochet placemats and coasters! While I could reuse last year’s set, I can never resist a new yarn find—and I love a good excuse to show off some fresh crochet skills.

These boho-style doily placemats are fast, beginner-friendly, and perfect for outdoor entertaining. Whether you’re hosting a post-beach dinner or a quiet morning coffee among your plants and seashells, these neutral, textured mats add the perfect handmade touch.

Why You’ll Love This Pattern

  • Fast & Easy: Only 14 rounds from start to finish.
  • Beginner Friendly: Uses basic stitches and simple shaping.
  • Durable: The cotton/acrylic blend ensures they are easy to clean and hold their shape after washing.
  • Versatile: While I used a neutral ombre, these look stunning in solid jewel tones or crisp white.

Pro Tip for Beginners: To ensure your stitch count stays perfect, place a stitch marker in your first slip stitch of each round. It’s the easiest way to avoid adding accidental “extra” stitches—a common mistake that can make your work ruffle!

ABBREVIATIONS (The pattern is in US terms):

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet (UK double crochet)
  • dc: double crochet (UK treble crochet)

Pattern Details & Gauge

Before you pick up your hook, make sure to check your gauge. Even though this isn’t a wearable garment, an incorrect gauge can result in a placemat that is either too small for a dinner plate or “gigantic!”

  • Final Measurement: Approx. 15 inches in diameter (after blocking).
  • Gauge: 16 single crochet (sc) = 4 inches.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Medium (4) weight yarn. I used Caron Cotton Painterly Cakes in the color Fresh Baked Bread (approx. 115 yards per placemat).
  • Hook: Size H (5 mm) crochet hook.
  • Tools: Stitch markers and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
