The Knit Pattern You’ll Need This Winter: Cascading Bells Scarf

A hand knit scarf modeled on a mannequin against a white background. The stitch design resembles cascading Bells and is made with a light gray yarn.

The Cascading Bells Scarf Free Knitting Pattern

There is nothing quite like the satisfaction of a knitting project that looks incredibly intricate but is secretly simple to stitch. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing couch project or you’re a beginner ready to move past the basic garter stitch, this is the perfect pattern.

Introducing the Cascading Bells Scarf. This free knitting pattern creates a pretty, textured design that mimics the shape of overlapping bells. Best of all? It is reversible, it looks polished and beautiful no matter how you wrap it.

The texture is created using a simple four row repeat. Once you get through the first few inches, you’ll likely have the pattern memorized!

Want a skinny decorative scarf? A chunky oversized wrap? You can easily customize this pattern to any width or length just by adjusting your cast on numbers. This also makes a beautiful Cascading Bells blanket. Just cast on more stitches in the required multiple!

Ready to cast on? Grab your needles and let’s get started on your new scarf!

SKILL LEVEL:

Beginner and up.

MATERIALS:

  • Medium (4) weight yarn. I used 300 yards of Big Twist in Soft Grey for the 60 inch length shown in the picture. Solid or tonal yarns show off the bell texture best.
  • Size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles or size recommended for your yarn.

GAUGE:

Not critical for this project but mine was 16 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.

SIZE OF THE ONE IN THE PICTURE: 5.5 inches by 60 inches.

DIRECTIONS:

Cast on 35 stitches for 5.5 inch width. If you want to make it wider increase the cast on in multiples of 5.

– Knit 1 row

Row 1: (K1, P1) 2 times, *K2, P3; repeat from * across to the last 6 stitches, K2, (P1, K1) 2 times.

Row 2 (RS): (P1, K1) 2 times, P2, *K3, P2; repeat from * across to the last 4 stitches, (K1, P1) 2 times.

Row 3: Repeat row 1.

Row 4: (P1, K1) 2 times, P2, *yo, slip 1 stitch as to knit, k2tog, pass slip stitch over the k2tog, yo, P2; repeat from * across to the last 4 stitches, (K1, P1) 2 times.

Repeat rows 1 – 4 until the scarf measures 60 inches or your desired length ending with row 3 and bind off knitwise.

That’s it and your Cascading Bells Scarf is finished! Very simple yet it looks so pretty and I received many compliments when I wore it the other day. As always, I would love to see any finished scarves and all the beautiful colors you chose!
