The Gypsy Summer Shawl Crochet Pattern.

Looking for the perfect lightweight crochet shawl pattern for summer? The Gypsy Summer Shawl is an airy, open-stitch design that works up quickly and doubles as a stylish one-sleeve poncho. Whether you need a breezy layer for a spring morning or a chic crochet beach cover-up, this versatile pattern has you covered.

Why You’ll Love This Easy Crochet Pattern

This is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern that uses a simple two-row repeat. It’s the ultimate “mindless” project—perfect for relaxing on the couch while watching a movie.

  • Versatile Style: Wear it as a traditional shawl or sew a small seam to transform it into a trendy one-sleeve poncho.
  • Customizable Size: While the sample measures 56″ x 16.5″, you can easily adjust the length or width to fit your body perfectly.
  • Any Yarn Goes: I used a light-weight yarn for a delicate look, but this open-mesh stitch looks beautiful in everything from cotton to bulky wool.

Pattern Details & Materials

To recreate the exact look shown in the photos, here is what you will need:

  • Yarn: Light weight (Category 3) yarn. I used Loops & Threads Kai in Mint Chip. (Note: You can substitute with any yarn weight of your choice!)
  • Hook: Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook.
  • Gauge: 17 sc = 4 inches (Though gauge is not critical for this drape, it helps for sizing).
  • Other: Yarn needle for sewing the poncho seam and weaving in ends.

ABBREVIATIONS (The pattern is in US terms):

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet (UK double crochet)
  • dc: double crochet (UK treble crochet)

At this point, I recommend trying it on to check the fit! Feel free to sew a few more (or fewer) stitches until you reach your perfect neck width and arm opening.
